What is Chain of Custody Certification?
Today with a sceptical public and the Lacey Act to keep in mind, it’s more important than ever that you know where your paper comes from. And it’s equally important that we can produce the documentation to confirm it.
That’s why certification is the cornerstone of Catalyst’s transparency program. Through chain of custody certification, our products are tracked – by highly respected, independent organizations – from their point of origin through every step in the complex, multi-stage paper manufacturing process. Chain of custody certification means that we’re not just saying that our paper is made with integrity; we’re backing up our promise through the endorsement of non-profit, non-governmental third-party experts.
These experts enforce international standards that spell out the right way for forest-based industries to do business. Our Canadian operations are registered to the Swiss-based Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification; our Snowflake recycle operation in the United States is subject to the standards of the German-based Forest Stewardship Council. We encourage you to visit these sites and see for yourself the stringent standards they require for certification.
Why does Certification Matter?
Independent chain of custody certification is your assurance that our paper is made from chips from legally harvested forests, that it originates from reputable sources and that it’s produced with materials that reflect high ecological, social and ethical standards. In helping to conserve sensitive forest ecosystems and support proper forest management, chain of custody certification is key to the big picture.
But it also benefits your individual business on a day-to-day basis. Certification means that you can stand behind the pedigree of your paper – and display certification labels on your finished products. And that can carry a lot of influence with your customers.
Catalyst is committed to chain of custody. Because on every level, a clear line of sight – from forest to mill through to the finished printed product – adds value.
